Toughened glass

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that is made through a process of extreme heating and rapid cooling. This process makes it much stronger than regular glass and allows it to withstand impacts and stress better. Here are some key points about toughened glass:

  1. Manufacturing Process: The glass is heated to around 620–650°C (1148–1202°F) and then rapidly cooled. This process puts the surface of the glass into compression and the center into tension, which strengthens the glass.

  2. Strength and Durability: Toughened glass is approximately five to ten times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness. It can withstand higher impacts and temperature fluctuations.

  3. Safety: When broken, toughened glass shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which reduces the risk of injury.

  4. Applications: It is used in a variety of applications, including car windows, shower doors, glass doors and tables, and facades of buildings.

  5. Thermal Resistance: It can endure higher temperature changes compared to regular glass. For instance, it can withstand sudden changes in temperature without cracking.

  6. Limitations: Toughened glass cannot be cut or modified once it has been processed, so any changes must be made before the toughening process.
